School-day-tailored Main Stage shows, lesson plans and more

All TGS educational programming supports NJ and National core-curriculum guidelines and standards.

Main Stage/Field Trip Matinees

Our field trips feature the same shows that appear on our Main Stage on the weekends. They have been tailored to meet the tight constraints of a school-day in our Main Stage Matinee Series.

In addition to your class trip to our theatre for the performance, we continue our practice of providing excellent lesson plans. Furthermore, your students will have a Q&A session with our professional artistic team of directors, designers and actors.

Additionally, matinees will be available during the show’s Main Stage run.

Catching the Moon

Recommended grades 1-4

Catching the Moon tells the spirited story of the Black girl who grew up to become “Toni Stone,” the first woman to play for an all-male professional baseball team.

With the crack of a bat, Marcenia Lyle rounds the bases with ease and slides into home. It’s the ballfield she knows and loves best. So, when famous baseball manager Gabby Street comes scouting players for summer camp, Marcenia steps up to the plate to compete. She’s determined to pursue her passion and defy the naysayers who discourage her from following her dream because she’s a girl.

Knuffle Bunny

Recommended grades Pre-K to 2

Based on the beloved Caldecott Honor-winning picture book, Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical is filled with adventure, song and dancing laundry and an instant children’s classic! Six-time Emmy Award winner, Mo Willems, teams up with Grammy Award-winning composer, Michael Silversher, to create this heart-warming and hilarious musical.

The story: girl loves stuffed animal. Girl loses beloved animal. Girl fights to get animal back. Trixie, her father, and her favorite stuffed bunny set off on a trip to the Laundromat. The trip brings wonder, excitement and joy to the lively toddler until she realizes that she has left her Knuffle Bunny back at the laundromat. Trixie does everything in her power to make her father understand the emergency, but her father fails to see the issue at hand.

Touring & Resident Company

Beyond our Main Stage Matinees, The Growing Stage offers unique resources for educational enrichment through our touring and resident companies.

Fulfilling our mission of nurturing the performing arts through education, we have had the privilege of performing for schools throughout New Jersey.

In addition, The Growing Stage is on the New Jersey State Council on the Arts approved roster of Artist Residency Companies.
